Staircase stitch uses a simple slip-stitch technique. You only have to knit with one color at a time.

  • On RS rows, slip stitches with yarn in back.
  • On WS rows, slip stitches with yarn in front.
Color A, cast on a multiple of 5, + 2.
Color A, knit.
Row 1: Color B, K5, * SL1, K4; rep from *, ending last rep with K1 (instead of K4).
Row 2 and all WS rows: With same color used on previous row, knit the purl stitches and slip the slipped stitches as they face you.
Row 3: Color A, K4, * SL1, K4; rep from *, ending last rep with K2 (instead of K4).
Row 5: Color B, K3, * SL1, K4; rep from *, ending last rep with K3 (instead of K4).
Row 7: Color A, K2, * SL1, K4; rep from * to end.
Row 9: Color B, K1, * SL1, K4; rep from * to last st, K1.
Row 11: Color A, K5, * SL1, K4; rep from *, ending last rep with K1 (instead of K4).
Row 13: Color B, K4, * SL1, K4; rep from *, ending last rep with K2 (instead of K4).
Row 15: Color A, K3, * SL1, K4; rep from *, ending last rep with K3 (instead of K4).
Row 17: Color B, K2, * SL1, K4; rep from * to end.
Row 19: Color A, K1, * SL1, K4; rep from * to last st, K1.
Repeat rows 1 - 20.
